So let’s dive into today’s lesson:
***
I can never forget when I decided to be
serious with my academics. It was sometime in Senior Secondary School. Before
then, I was just like most average students who went to class, didn’t listen to
half of what the teacher spoke about and rejoiced when the teacher eventually
left the class.
I was a boarding school student so
during night preps (which were meant for study), I’d gist with my class-mate,
scan through a few pages of my book and then sleep until it was over. I tried
to keep my grades a little bit above average so that my parents didn’t have any
reason to scold me.
However, my turning point arrived when
results were released and I almost failed “Yoruba Language”. Every normal
student would probably ignore that but somehow; it was like a terrible blow to
me.
For crying out loud, I was a
full-blooded Yoruba lady and yet, I was having a challenge with the subject. I
bothered on this thought throughout the holiday and then made a decision to get
an “A” in Yoruba Language the next term. My target was to do excellently well
in Yoruba but somehow this affected my attitude to other subjects.
It was like a “seriousness syndrome”
had been injected into me and I began to take every single subject more
seriously. Classes were no longer a bore to me as I struggled to listen
attentively to the teacher and even began to participate by answering questions.
Knowing the fact that I’m an every-day
reader also helped me utilize this strength. Even when there were no tests or
exams, I would read like never before. Beyond this, I would tell God what I
wanted in my results. Surprisingly, reading during night prep was no longer a
problem for me.
To cut the long story short, I emerged
with an “A” in Yoruba that term and had a very outstanding result. It was at
that point I realized something very vital that I hold unto even till this day.
There is nothing you can’t achieve if
you believe “you can”.
This experience
has taught me some strategies required to excel academically or in any area of
your life. They include:
Change your
approach: A
wise man once stated that “If you keep on adopting the same method, you’d
always get the same result”. I wasn’t a very serious student until my
experience with “Yoruba language”.
I wanted an “A” in the subject and knew
that seriousness was required to achieve it. The only constant thing is
“change” and until you change your approach, you can never tell if you’re at
your peak.
Know what works
best for you:
No two individuals have the same finger-prints and that makes each person
unique. The fact that your friend reads at night doesn’t necessarily mean that
night-reading is best for you. Find out what works best for you and adopt it so
that you can maximize your ability.
Don’t depend on
yourself: No
human being is sufficient on their own and that’s the truth. We all need God
because it’s in Him we live, move and have our being. No matter the goal you
want to achieve, constantly commit it to God and ask him for the grace to
realize your dreams. Remember, God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly more
than we can ask or think.
