“Learning is improved by connecting new ideas to already established ideas” – Tolu Alao

Any time you are introduced to a new subject, your brain connects it to what’s already established (see art: Work on your foundation).

That’s the way we learn, so basically if there’s nothing your brain can relate with, it becomes difficult if not impossible to grasp an idea.

To stimulate this process, deliberately seek out ways to connect what you have learnt with what you are learning.

For example, if am told that a Mr. Lagbaja was born in 1963, my brain tells me that the Mr. Lagbaja was born 3 years after Nigeria’s independence i.e. 1960 (which is already established there!) You see, I’ve connected the year of Nigeria’s independence to Mr. Lagbaja’s birth year. That’s the way these things work – ‘connections’ or ‘associations’.

What makes us creative is the quality and quantity of connections we are able to make with other seemly unrelated stuffs.

Once connections are made, it becomes rather impossible to forget ideas and concepts.
Many of us make these connections subconsciously without knowing (which is good by the way) but I want you to now consciously and constantly connect the ‘dots’.
Link ideas together. Join two and two together and you’ll be surprised how easy it is to recall. As a matter of fact many of us don’t have a problem getting things in, the main issue is getting it out- recalling what you put in.

When you start connecting, what you know well already, it triggers you to remember what you just learnt now and before you know it! Gbam!! The new knowledge becomes a part and parcel of you.
