Use What You Have

“There’s a reason you have what you have, so use what you have, to get what you need” – Tolu Alao

One thing am pretty sure of is, you are already a good learner! You’ve had to be throughout life so far.

No one is born with the ability to walk, use utensils, write, drive, read, cook, swim, speak several languages, operate an electronic device and even understand an analogue clock!

Yet you’ve managed to do this effortlessly. The funny thing is you probably don’t remember how you learnt them. You’ve learnt the most important things in life informally.

My goal is that you realize that you can translate this ‘informal’ ways to learn anything you want to effortlessly!

Remember, intelligence is not just about IQ (Intelligence Quotient), it’s more of a way of acting! Thus it’s not fixed (see article on exercise your brain), it can be improved upon or even downgraded, as a matter of fact the motto is ‘Use it or Lose it’.

According to the research done by Dr. Howard Gardner (of Harvard University) we have seven (7) forms of intelligences:

Dr. Howard Gardner

·      Linguistic Intelligence: the ability to speak quite well, the gift of gab or the gift of writing well (usually in poets and novel writers).

· Mathematical/Logical Intelligence: the ability to deal well with numbers and to think logically (usually in engineers, scientist and accountants).

·        Visual/Spatial Intelligence: the ability to visualize how things will eventually look in advance before they are created or to imagine things in your mind’s eye (usually in designers, architects and artists).

·        Musical Intelligence: the ability to create and interpret music or the ability to keep rhythm (usually in ‘great’ musicians-composers, singers etc).

· Bodily/Physical Intelligence: the ability to move well, run, dance, build/construct something (usually in sport stars, art, crafts etc).

·        Inter-personal/Social Intelligence: the ability to communicate and get along with others (usually in sales people, managers, entertainers, public speakers, court room lawyers and anyone that makes a living by influencing people in any way).

·        Intra-personal/Inner Control Intelligence: the ability for quiet and objective self-analysis i.e. the ability to understand your own behavior and feelings.

Dr. Howard Gardner now rounds up by saying intelligence should be defined as the ability to create useful products and solve every day problems.

So how does this new knowledge play in the scheme of things? It’s simple!

We can now say with certainty that you become extraordinarily good at learning when you know how well to use all your intelligences in the area of your life that is important to you.

For example, people today are now learning mathematics through songs, chants and jingles (musical intelligence) or by physically handling counters (physical intelligence) or by actually picturing the patterns of the numbers (visual intelligence) and they are doing it effortlessly and loving it!

There’s a reason you have what you have, so use what you have, to get what you need!
